Every once in a while, a movie comes along and finds a place in our hearts and remains there for a long, long time.

The Sound of Music was that movie. Well, technically, it was a musical. It’s a love story about the unlikeliest of pairs, a retired naval officer and a young lady training to be a nun.

The on-screen chemistry between the two (played by Christopher Plummer and Julie Andrews) was so strong that it would be expected that they might have ended up together. But they never did.

Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that The Sound of Music is an amazing movie.

What's the big deal with The Sound of Music?

Put aside all the negative reviews the movie received on its release, take an unbiased look at The Sound of Music, and you'll see without a doubt a classic.

It had bad guys, love and romance, intrigue, and a cast of singers and dancers singing catchy songs to boot.

Also, The Sound of Music wasn't just a lovely movie; it was a real cash cow becoming the highest earning box office movie from its release in 1965 and holding that position till 1970.

The cherry on top would have been if the two lead actors actually got together in real life.

Why Julie Andrews never dated Christopher Plummer.

The chemistry was present and visible. So why didn't they get together?

Well, the reason was simple. At the time of the shooting, they were both in difficult phases of their lives.

Christopher was going through a divorce, and drowning himself in alcohol and late nights playing piano at hotels. Julie, on the other hand, was going through a rough patch with her then-husband, Tony Walton, and she also had to take care of her daughter, Emma, who was almost 2 years old at the time.

While the two admitted to having crushes on each other, the stars would never align for them romantically speaking. However, they have remained good friends to date.

The co-stars reflect on The Sound of Music, and their decades-long friendship.

Over the years, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer have kept their friendship going strong. The two starred in a live television production of On Golden Pond in 2001 and touring the U.S. and Canada in the 2002 stage extravaganza, A Royal Christmas.

In an interview with Vanity Fair in 2015, they appeared to still have some of the chemistry that made them as Maria and Georg von Trapp so great to watch. They also throw light-hearted jabs at each other, like best friends do.

Overall, it is clear that they enjoy each other's company, which makes it no surprise that they have stayed friends this long.

It's rare to find friendships like theirs - they have been friends for over 50 years! While it would have been great if their on-screen chemistry had translated into a real-life love story, we'll settle for that.

After all, we'll always have Maria and Georg Von Trapp.
