Michael Phelps' Son, Boomer, Looks like He's On His Way To Becoming An Olympic Swimmer Just Like His Dad

March 22, 2018

It's no secret that Olympic icon, Michael Phelps, has already started teaching his son Boomer to swim; he's previously appeared in the pool with Boomer from an early age. But in a new Instagram post, the U.S. athlete shared some adorable behind-the-scenes footage of his son's training.

Michael Phelps: fish or human?

The swimmer has set the record for winning the most medals, 28, of any Olympic athlete in history. Phelps competed in his first Olympics at the age of 15, as part of the U.S. men's swim team.

He was the first American male swimmer to earn a spot on five Olympic teams and also made history as the oldest individual gold medalist in Olympic swimming history at the age of 28. For the Discovery Channel’s July 2017 Shark Week, Michael Phelps raced several breeds of sharks.

The team developed a unique device to measure each shark’s speed using bait. The hammerhead shark swam the distance at 15 miles per hour, while the great white shark swam at a whopping 26 miles per hour. Phelps only beat the reef shark by 0.2 seconds, clocking in at 6 miles per hour.

His son, Boomer, is taking after him in the swimming department.

The 28-time Olympic medalist and his wife, Nicole Johnson, welcomed their son, Boomer, in May 2016. He made his adorable Olympic debut in Rio, and they’ve had a “blast” watching their son get older. Michael Phelps is a natural in the pool, and, it seems, at fatherhood.

In an interview, he said:

We’re at the stage where we’re constantly looking out for him because he’s grabbing everything. Boomer has a pretty short attention span though, so he’ll go from interested to not in a second.

Phelps says he also sings goodnight songs and reads books to Boomer before his 7:30 p.m. bedtime. Phelps says he’s also been teaching his son to swim in the family’s backyard pool.

We basically hop in two or three times a week.  Boomer loves it; he floats around in our hands trying to swim butterfly. He loves being in the water, and he doesn’t mind going under.

The Olympian adds that Boomer might turn out to be an even better swimmer than his dad.

The Phelps family recently announced the birth of their second child.

Michael Phelps and his wife, Nicole Johnson, welcomed their second baby into the world on a Monday. Phelps and Johnson, both 32 years old, announced the exciting news on Instagram, sharing photos with newborn boy Beckett Richard Phelps in the arms of his mama and older brother, Boomer.

Considering their genetics, it should come as no surprise that Michael Phelps’ sons would love the call of water.
