Every year, about 6.5 million animals enter shelters in the United States. The numbers are almost evenly split between cats and dogs. The number is down by over 1 million since 2011, with dogs recording the highest decline by about 600,000.

There are an estimated 78 million dogs and 85.8 million cats living in the United States with owners. For the most part, people who find it hard managing their pets tend to drop them off at shelters. This accounts for at least 47% of cats rehomed in America.

Sadly, most pets are worse for wear when they spend a long time in shelters. Dogs, in particular, are prone to anxiety disorders, destructive behavior, and other physical manifestations of fear or distress. Nevertheless, a little love and attention can go a long way to correcting these anomalies.

Rocco's tale

In September, Dog Lovers United posted this video of an adorable dog named Rocco. He is one of many pets whose owners drop them at shelters as they are unable to take care of them. In his case, Rocco’s family was expecting a baby and felt they did not need him anymore.

Life in a shelter can be rough and Rocco had already begun to withdraw but thankfully, he found a new owner and a new home. Now Rocco is settling in nicely in his new environment. His new owner has taken over his Instagram account to share his amazing adventures and his fan following is growing by the day.

Rocco is adjusting very well and has already claimed his spot on the couch! #roccosensation

Pets can get attached to their owners when they get the love and attention they need and it hurts when they are separated. Nevertheless, finding a new home for a pet is a wonderful thing. There are millions of dogs and cats that need adoption so if you are hunting for a furry friend, try adopting.
