According to Ellen Hart who's the dog's mom, the Dude's first reaction to the long-beaked birds was hilarious. He stuck his nose toward them, unsure of what the strange creatures were. But, the three ducklings began to bond with him almost immediately completely unaware that they could get eaten.

Inter-species animal adoption is real

They found his fur very comforting and took to following him around. To them, he was just one giant duckling! And the Dude grew to love them.

In fact, Ellen says the dear dog taught his new duck children/siblings how to swim and became so in sync with them that they all now love to eat the same thing - peas.

Sadly, the only thing they don't get to do together is playing fetch. The Dude has tried desperately to get them to play fetch with him, but they are incapable of pulling it off. Although, they get in a lot of dog-like fights together and it's just heart-melting to watch.

Just in case you find this unusual, the Dude is not the only dog who's willing to adopt other animals and treat them like family. Inter-species animal adoption videos abound on YouTube. You could spend all day just watching videos of dogs with their adopted kittens, birds, pigs, squirrels and even wolf cubs. We have to warn you, it's very addictive!
