The doors of Buckingham Palace are occasionally open to members of the public, but only so many people get the opportunity to actually sleep in the palace. Former First Lady Michelle Obama is one of the few people who has had the honor.

In 2011, while on a state visit with Barack Obama, she got the opportunity to actually ‘sleepover’ in the palace.

She shared her experience during an interview with MUSE hosted by Klick Health earlier this year in New York. And she painted a rarely-seen picture of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip.

I think by the time we had the sleepover we had enough interacting with them. The surprising thing is folks wanted to be treated normally. Everybody is happy when all the people are gone. They want to be hugged. They want to be touched. They gossip.

One thing she was probably not as fond of was the food. Michelle said she actually preferred American food to the delicacies served at the palace. The plus side was that she still accepted the fact that the Queen had ‘better china’.

During the state banquet, the plate that I thought was the charger, that was the plate. They put food on the gold charger.

While Michelle thoroughly enjoyed the trip, there is one detail she missed that would have amounted to a very scary moment. According to Ben Rhodes, Obama’s former national security adviser, a rogue mouse made its way into the room the Obamas were staying in.

Rhodes said a butler entered the room to inform the president whose reply was simple and straight to the point, "Don't tell the First Lady."

Thankfully, the former FLOTUS was not aware about the mouse and what could have been a dramatic turn of events was avoided. She may have gone down in history as the first U.S. FLOTUS to get harassed by a mouse at the palace.

Rhode’s book titled The World As It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House is a memoir of his time serving under President Barack Obama starting in 2007, when he was drafted as a speechwriter for the Obama campaign.

It provides insights into some of the inner workings of the White House and presents a different view of the man who was once viewed as the leader of the free world.
