During a conversation with Piers Morgan in 2013, Jackson offered a peek at Joe Jackson's parenting tactics, and they were not so savory to say the least. He would often hit his children if they misbehaved and maintained a stern exterior at all times.

Michael Jackson revealed to Martin Bashir in the 2003 documentary "Living with Michael Jackson" that his father would punish them even during rehearsals, sometimes with a belt in his hand.

It was more than just a belt — cords, whatever was around. [He’d] throw you up against the wall as hard as you could. He would lose his temper. … I was so fast, he couldn’t catch me half the time. But when he would catch me? It was bad. It was really bad.

The Jackson children had a troubling relationship with their father even after they gained their independence.

In one of his final interviews, Joe Jackson was asked by Closer Weekly about his dreams for his family in the future. The event was the Elton John AIDS Foundation Academy Award Party on March 4, 2018.

All of my family is famous and known everywhere. They're known all over the world. When I say 'everywhere,' I mean all over the world. And I want them to keep it up and I hope they will.

On Friday, Janet Jackson received the Impact Award during the Radio Disney Music Awards. Speaking about the influence of family on her work, she commended her father Joe Jackson for his contributions in the past. At the time, he was in a Las Vegas hospital.

My mother nourished me with the most extravagant love imaginable, my father, my incredible father, drove me to be the best that I can. My siblings set an incredibly high standard for artistic excellence… Sometimes, having an impact can be as simple as a smile, a handshake, or a hug.

According to PEOPLE, Janet was quite vocal about her admiration for her father, a stark contrast to the earlier narratives of life with Joe Jackson from the Jackson children.

Jackson’s manager, Charles Coupet, allowed members of the family to see him on Tuesday night. We wish the Jackson family find solace in the days ahead.
