Princess Diana Did Not Wear Chanel After Her Divorce: It Reminded Her Of Prince Charles And Camilla
The royal wedding between Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer in 1981 was an international spectacle that won the hearts of millions of fans. Sadly, the reality of their marriage was far from ideal.
Prince Charles was romantically attached to Camilla Shand. After Prince Harry was born, Prince Charles rekindled his relationship with Camilla. And that signaled the beginning of the end.
In 1995, when BBC journalist Martin Bashir asked Diana’s thoughts on Camilla and the breakdown of her marriage, she famously replied, “Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded”. This odd love triangle came to an end with Prince Charles and Diana getting divorced in 1996.
Diana refused to wear Chanel because of Camilla
Although she was always turning heads with her fashion sense, the late Diana seemed to avoid wearing Chanel after her divorce.
Australian designer Jayson Brundson revealed that he had the opportunity of styling Diana for a charity event and that is when he made the discovery. While trying to select a pair of shoes to go with the cream Versace skirt suit Diana picked out, he found a pair of Chanel shoes.
Not knowing she had reservations, Brundson said 'well these would look great with the Versace' to which Diana replied, 'no, I can't wear linked Cs, the double C". When Brundson asked why, she said, 'it's Camilla and Charles'."
Brundson finally found a pair of Gucci’s and that was it.
It was definitely the timing, it being post-divorce. She would have seen linked Cs and they would have just reminded her of Charles and Camilla. The shoes were quite boldly Chanel, I think they had gold linked Cs on them. And I think for photo optics, people would have honed in on that considering it was so fresh after the divorce as well.
Brundson shared his story in an exclusive interview with Harper's BAZAAR. He also added that Diana did not have a problem with the brand per say. She was more concerned about the public making a connection with Prince Charles and Camilla.
Life after divorce
A lot changed after Diana’s divorce. First, she lost the title of her royal highness, no thanks to Prince Charles. But the Queen still permitted her to use the title Diana, Princess of Wales. Also, she was allowed to keep all the jewelry she got for her wedding.
Despite the uproar after the divorce, she did manage to co-parent her sons with Prince Charles. Even with her separation, Diana enjoyed some royal perks. She had access to the royal family jets and got invited to some royal events as well.
Before her death in 1997, she was dating Egyptian heir and film producer Dodi Fayed.
