As Sally Bedell Smith in her book Prince Charles: Paradoxes of an Improbable Life, it was Prince Philip's letter to Charles that made the young man feel pressured to marry Diana. But, Sally believes Philip didn't mean to order his son to marry Diana, his letter was purely advising Charles to think harder about what he wants in his life.

Whatever Philip's influence was, there's no denying Charles wasn't ready to marry Diana, and we know it didn't end well.

But, Charles' marriage wasn't the only thing his father played a part in. Apparently, Prince Philip was the one who encouraged Charles to get serious with Camilla, after his marriage to Diana had ended.

Father's advice

When Charles and Diana's marriage was falling to pieces, there was no rest for the entire royal family. Heartbroken Diana was desperately trying to salvage their relationship and begging everyone for the help. But Charles' heart was set on Camilla and he was refusing to let her go.

No one could help poor Diana, also mainly because Charles' well-being was a bigger priority.

The Queen was hoping to save her son's face and deal with the blowback of Diana's countless interviews about what went wrong between them.

Prince Philip, on the other hand, looked at the situation calmly and had only one piece of advice for his son.

Princess Diana shared what Philip allegedly told Charles, once the divorce was set in stone, as revealed in 2017 Channel 4 special:

My father-in-law said to my husband, 'If your marriage doesn't work out, you can always go back to her after five years.'

Powered by his father's encouragement, Prince Charles did follow his feelings for Camilla and officially came out with their relationship several years after the divorce.

What was behind Philip's advice to his son?

Some of you may think of Prince Philip's advice that his son can just get with his mistress after the divorce was too cold, but the Queen's husband personally admits that about himself.

As British reporter Gyles Brandreth revealed from his conversation with the Duke of Edinburgh when asked about the difference between him and his son:

He’s a romantic and I’m a pragmatist. That means we do see things differently. And because I don’t see things as a romantic would, I’m unfeeling.

That's it, Philip's character is what lies behind his calculative approach to Charles' love life. Then again, it's the same character that allowed his son to stop hiding and openly be with, what we're now pretty much convinced, the love of his life.
