Maples claimed she tried to prove Donald he has a beautiful soul, and that money is not so important in relations:

It was two people that came together that truly loved each other in a period of time. I wanted him to see how loved he could be for his soul, not for his money. And he knows that.

But at some point, their marriage didn’t work out, and the two decided to end it and file for divorce. When talking about the reason, Marla said:

I think you always hope in a marriage that you can bring the best out in each other. But after many years, we realized we weren't. And then, you have to move on. You know girls when we're in our twenties. We want to change the men we're with, we think that love is going to make them a little softer, and you think, 'I will learn how to speak out stronger for what I believe in.' Because I'm a Southern girl and I often just smile and keep on going. But I have my own thoughts and my own views, and it's time now to express them.

Despite all misunderstandings and the failed marriage, Marla Maples still remembers good things about the time they spent together and revealed them to the public.
