Reportedly, Ivanka Trump was using her personal email to discuss official White House matters. According to the Washington Post, she sent hundreds of emails from her personal account, and the domain was also shared by her husband, Jared Kushner.

It became clear after ethics officials reviewed emails that were sent to cabinet agencies. The spokesperson, Peter Mirijanian, stated that Ivanka Trump used her private account only for logistics and family matters, and rarely used it since the beginning of her role in the administration:

While transitioning into government, until the White House provided her the same guidance they had to others who started before she did, Ms. Trump sometimes used her private account, almost always for logistics and scheduling concerning her family.

Twitter users claim that Ivanka Trump should be treated the same way that Hillary Clinton was, and that FBI needs to investigate Ivanka’s case. Hillary Clinton’s use of private email was the focal point of Trump’s presidential campaign.

What are the potential consequences? Even though it is not illegal to use private accounts for government business, there is one rule everybody should follow.

According to the Presidential Records Act and Federal Records Act, officials have to forward the correspondence to the official working account within 20 days.
