Dolly Parton: Love, Faith, And Independence Are The Only Ingredients A Happy Marriage Needs

Date October 12, 2018

In May 2016, the Queen of Country, Miss Dolly Parton and her husband, Carl Dean celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, an occasion that demonstrated the couple’s steadfast love for each other over the years.

Their journey started at a laundromat

Their journey in love started in Music City when 18-year-old Dolly Parton met Carl Dean, then a 21-year-old stud. That day, Dolly was at the Wishy Washy Laundromat when a young inquisitive gentleman walked up to her and said that she was bound to get sunburnt in her revealing outfit.

As Dolly folded her clothes, she was surprised and delighted at the tall, handsome man that looked at her straight in her face, something that was truly rare to her. To Parton, Dean appeared genuinely interested in her as he appeared keen on finding out who she was and what she was about.

Shortly after, the two lover birds began dating and two years later, they tied the knot in a clandestine affair in Ringgold, Georgia, a union that they have kept alive through thick and thin.

What has kept their marriage strong for 52 years?

While marriage as an institution faces significant challenges today, for Parton and her hubby Dean, independence is one of the greatest reasons their union has persisted over the years.

You can’t be in each other’s face all the time.

For the couple, respecting each other’s independence has enabled them to have a beautiful life together, where boundaries are not only respected but also cherished.

From the beginning of her career, Dean made it clear that he was never going to be a Hollywood husband and over the years, his limited public appearances have made him invisible to the press. And to Parton, their exclusivity from each other has made their relationship effective. To the couple, appreciation for each other when they are apart has been a successful formula:

We don’t have to be together all the time.

Faith saved my marriage: Dolly Parton

Earlier this year, Parton revealed that faith has played a key role in making her marriage stronger. For Dolly Parton, who grew up in the Smoky Mountains, spirituality has been a common denominator since childhood.

Parton reveals that prayer and trust in God have helped her marriage, as it gave her strength in time of crisis. Parton, an inductee into the Country Music Wall of Fame, has been a passionate Christian, as she spends most of her time at their little chapel in Brentwood farm. The chapel, where Carl also goes to pray and reflect has become a symbol of their love for each other and a bedrock for their marriage.

As they turn 52 years-in-marriage, Parton and Dean are proof that persistence, love for each other, and faith in God are the only ingredients one needs for success.
