Serena Williams Gets Candid About Dealing With Postpartum Depression After Childbirth

Serena Williams and her partner, Alexis Ohanian, welcomed their daughter, Alexis Olympia, in 2017. The champion sportswoman had had an eventful year.

She won the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant, and she made it look effortless without dropping a set.

Just after she gave birth to her daughter, the tennis champ was joined by family and close friends, including Anna Wintour and Beyonce, to marry her partner.

Life after having her baby

Since giving birth, she has made a quite inspiring transition from hands-on mom to tennis star again. Recently, she reached the third round of the French Open where she is currently hopeful for a 24th Slam win.

Nonetheless, Serena says she is not putting too much pressure on herself even if winning will put her on the same level as the legendary Margaret Court.

After difficult delivery, she had to deal with the trauma of having her caesarean scar rupture because of post-delivery complications. Added to that, she suffered from post-partum depression.

Her ordeal did not take her out. She chose to share her experience in a CNN op-ed. And her feature on the May edition of Harper's Bazaar was largely about how she dealt with the trauma.

Humanitarian work

It's great that Serena is shining a light on these issues with her platform. According to a study done in the U.S. where the number of births recorded yearly is around 4 million, the recorded cases of post-partum depression can come up to 60,000.

We do hope she wins the Grand Slam anyway. But even if she doesn't, Serena Williams is a champ!
