When Priscilla Presley first met Elvis Presley, he was already the pop star, ten years older, and she was a mere 14-year-old.
Stolen teenage years
As the story goes, Elvis could not get over his fascination with the young girl and somehow convinced her parents to let her hang out with him. So began the 8-year courtship that would lead to them getting married in 1967, while Elvis continued to carry on his affairs and heavily depend on drugs.
But by far the worst part of becoming Elvis’ woman at such a young age was losing herself. She told the hosts of Loose Women that she had to adjust to living within the bubble of Graceland.
Her teenage years were lost to following in the pop star's footsteps.
Total control over her image
Priscilla says Elvis wanted to have total control over her image at all times. Yet, he never saw her get dressed during the years of their marriage.
He only wanted to see the end result. And he never cared to see what she looked like without makeup.
Because of the standard, she had to live by, her youth was stolen and she never really knew who she was. But then she began to take dance classes while he was on tour, and for the first time, she saw that women could have lives of their own.
I didn't have my teenage years as a normal girl, obviously, so I had to adapt. So I just kind of followed what he did. I mean, you lived his life. You honestly didn't have your own life… So you really kind of lost yourself. The times when he was touring, I would go to dance class. I started realizing that women have their own life.
After years of living the life the pop idol wanted and letting him force her into looking the way he preferred – he also got Priscilla to dye her hair so that they would have matching hair colors – in 1973, she divorced him.
This sad but brave decision was to save herself. Priscilla says she did not fall out of love with him, she was simply hungry to find herself in the world.
