Date May 24, 2019

One of the reasons why Scientology is so widely talked about is that it has a number of celebrity members. The most prominent ones are actors John Travolta and Tom Cruise, and, as you likely know, Elvis Presley’s ex-wife Priscilla.

Suzanne Finstad wrote in her explosive biography Child Bride: The Untold Story of Priscilla Beaulieu Presley that Priscilla had been in the church for many years (since before 1982) and also brought her daughter Lisa Marie Presley into the fold.

Lisa Marie Presley on being a Scientologist

In her 2005 interview with Larry King, Lisa Marie explained what drew her to Scientology and what being part of this church meant to her.

She told King:

I just knew it was for me, because it wasn’t something that was gonna shove, you know, make me believe in something…

They just had the answers that explained life, people, and need, that made sense to me, that worked, that answered a lot of my questions.

When King asked Lisa Marie her opinion on why the church was viewed as controversial by so many people, she said:

I think that anything that’s young and growing quickly is scary and controversial.

Lisa Marie sounded like a dedicated Scientologist, but then she changed her mind a few years later…

Are Priscilla and Lisa Marie still in the church?

According to the most recent accounts, Priscilla Presley is still very much a Scientologist. Her rep confirmed to People in 2017 that she hadn’t left the church.

But it’s a different story with her daughter. Lisa Marie grew disillusioned in Scientology teachings and left the church sometime around 2012. She told USA Today:

I got bad advice. I was insulated with no grip on reality. They were taking my soul, my money, my everything.

Lisa Marie’s late father, Elvis, called it before celebrities of this day even knew about the existence of Scientology. He once said: “F**k those people. All they want is my money.”

Sounds like he knew what was up before everyone else did!
