But before he became famous and joined Scientology, Tom was a devout Catholic and even wanted to become a priest.
Tom and his three sisters were raised Catholic. His mother took him and his sisters and moved away from her kids' abusive father to Louisville, and it was there that Tom met a priest who inspired him to follow his path.
Tom started studying at a Franciscan seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was very serious about his faith and his future as a priest. His friend from the seminary told New York Daily News:
[Tom] had a very strong Catholic faith. We went to Mass, spent time in the chapel and enjoyed hearing stories from the priests. We thought the priests had a great lifestyle and we were really interested in priesthood.
The seminary was also a place where Tom’s interest in acting started growing. The school had a drama club, and Tom joined it, taking part in various productions over the two years of studying.
He didn’t graduate from the seminary, though. He and his family relocated to New Jersey. However, his seminary friend, Shane Dempler, remembers a different reason why Tom didn’t finish studying.
Shane told New York Daily News that he and Tom were troublemakers and were once caught stealing liquor from their Franciscan fathers who were planning a celebration. He and Tom were asked to leave, Shane said:
The school wrote a letter to our parents saying they liked us both, but would prefer if we didn't return. So we weren't kicked out, just preferred not to go.
Early in his acting career, Tom remained a Christian. His Risky Business co-star Curtis Armstrong recalled in a memoir how he and other guys would invite Tom to join them at a bar in the evening, but he refused, saying he needed to memorize his lines and then read the Bible before sleep.
