"It Was Inevitable": Lisa Marie Presley On How She Tried To Save Michael Jackson From Her Dad's Fate

Date December 27, 2018

Lisa Marie Presley’s short-lived marriage to Michael Jackson didn’t seem to be as full of drama as the singers' other relationships. But there was one eerie conversation between them that Presley opened up about after his death, and it still haunts her to this day.

How their relationship started

Presley, ten years Jackson’s junior, met him once when she was a young girl. Years later, in 1992, the two singers became friends.

What started out as friendship soon became a romantic relationship. Presley became drawn to Jackson when he opened up to her and she realized he was nothing like his public image. He was vulnerable and ‘misunderstood’, and Presley made it her mission to take care of him.

Jackson predicted his fate, Presley said

The couple tied the knot in May 1994. Their marriage didn’t last – they divorced in January 1996. Some even speculated that the sole purpose of that marriage was to recover Jackson’s image amid his legal troubles.

However, Presley has always said their relationship was genuine, and they were really open and honest with each other. After Jackson’s death in 2009, Presley wrote a blog post and mentioned one candid conversation with him that she will never forget.

They were talking about Presley’s dad’s death (which was reportedly caused by prescription drug overdose) and Jackson said something that shook her to the core:

At some point he paused, he stared at me very intensely and he stated with an almost calm certainty, 'I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.'

Distraught Presley wrote:

I wanted to 'save him'. I wanted to save him from the inevitable, which is what has just happened.

Presley’s big regret

When Presley attended her ex-husband’s private funeral, she couldn’t help thinking about what she could have done differently to save him.

In a candid interview with Oprah, she recalled her thoughts as she stood over Jackson’s casket:

I felt like I wanted to apologize for not being around.

When Oprah asked Presley if she thought she could have saved Jackson, she said:

It’s naive to think that I could have but I wanted to. Could I have? Had I made a call, had I stopped being so shut off from him, had I said ‘How are you?’, could I try to make a phone call, you know?.. I really did regret that I didn’t.

But what happened was inevitable, after all, as Presley herself admitted.
