"Thinking About You Ma, Every Day": Whoopi Goldberg Hasn't Got Over Her Mom's Death 8 Years Ago

Date December 19, 2018 12:07

Whoopi Goldberg and her mom, Emma Johnson, were very close. Whoopi described her mom as her best friend and confidant – the two could talk about anything and everything. So when Emma died on August 29, 2010, following a stroke, Whoopi felt like part of her died, too. “It’s really hard to believe that she’s gone,” The View host told People in October that year.

Whoopi still misses her mom

Losing a parent is hard at any age. The 63-year-old actress and comedienne found solace in work, but she admits she thinks about her late mother every day.

Emma was 78 when she died. She raised Whoopi and her brother Clyde as a single mother and was there for Whoopi when she was left alone with her daughter Alexandrea.

Emma was still there to welcome her great-grandkids, Alexandrea’s children.

She was a nurse and a teacher, and she dedicated her whole life to taking care of kids. In an interview with People, Whoopi reminisced about her mom with great admiration:

Every day she’d say, ‘I’m proud of you.’ And I would respond, ‘I’m proud of you.’ I was very lucky to have her as a mother.

Whoopi on the pain of losing her nearest and dearest

Five years after her mother’s death, another family tragedy struck. In 2015, Whoopi’s elder brother Clyde died from a brain aneurysm.

Growing up, Whoopi was the youngest one in the tight-knit family of three, and it was hard for her to come to terms with losing both her mom and brother. Speaking on Loose Women in 2017, she said:

I was a weird little one but I was lucky because I had a great mother and a great brother. I was the baby. It's very bizarre when the baby is suddenly in the front so it's kind of trying to grow up. I didn't want to but here I am.

Such a loss must have been so hard to cope with. We hope Whoopi is in a good place now.
