Whoopi, who won an Oscar for her role in the film, performed spectacularly well. But did you know she almost didn’t get the role? It was Patrick Swayze who put in a word for Whoopi, saying: “I’m not making this movie unless you put Whoopi Goldberg in it.”

The two actors hit it off both on and off the screen, and it turns out Patrick may have had a crush on Whoopi. At least a mini-crush, maybe.

The late actor hadn’t known Whoopi in person before preparations for the filming started, but they soon became friends after they first met.

According to Patrick Swayze: One Last Dance, the actor's biography by Wendy Leigh, “he would sometimes joke that if he were not married to Lisa, he would have married Whoopi instead.”

Whoopi also loved him dearly

To Whoopi, Patrick was a dear friend like she was to him. She often attributed her Oscar nomination and win to his efforts, acknowledging that she got the part thanks to him.

She was absolutely devastated when she found out about his pancreatic cancer diagnosis. When Whoopi spoke about it on The View, she referred to Patrick as “a man I adore” and “a friend.”

There’s no doubt she misses him to this day.
