Rosie O'Donnell On Bittersweet Birth Of Her First Grandbaby A Day After Penny Marshall's Passing

The last two weeks of December were an emotional rollercoaster for Rosie O’Donnell.
On December 18, the actress welcomed her first grandchild! Her daughter Chelsea, with whom Rosie had a difficult relationship in the past, gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. The happy mom and her boyfriend, Jacob Bourassa, named their daughter Skylar Rose.
The new grandma didn’t make it to Wisconsin until after Skylar arrived, but she was still among the first ones to hold the girl!
However, the happy event was overshadowed by the sad one that happened the day before.
Rosie on welcoming her grandchild after losing a friend
Rosie got the call from her daughter just a day after her friend, actress and director Penny Marshall, passed away.
It was a surreal experience for the comedienne. She’d just lost a dear friend who helped propel her career, and then, just a day later, she experienced one of the biggest joys in life! Rosie told Seth Meyers on Late Night.:
It was a big, big heartbreak when [Penny] died, and then my granddaughter was born the next day. So I got the call that she had passed, and then I got the call [about my granddaughter].
It reminded me about the whole circle of life, and to remember every great thing that I had with her and that she really did give me a film career. I'll be eternally grateful.
Her first bonding moment with grandbaby
In a recent appearance on Today, Rosie said holding her granddaughter for the first time felt “really trippy.”
She recalled looking at Skylar with fascination and feeling super happy for Chelsea and her partner:
[Skylar] has a full head of black hair, like you could do styles, you know?
And just to see my daughter so happy and so, sort of, content… And this guy who loves her so much, loves the baby.
By the way, we are still waiting for the actress' announcement of the date of the next big event (Rosie's wedding) in the O’Donnell family!
