The couple decided to name their firstborn Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor but not many know that there is a sad story of a long royal feud behind his surname.

The meaning behind the surname

When Prince Philip became Queen Elizabeth’s husband, he had to say goodbye to all of his royal titles just to be with the woman he loves. The only remembrance of his heritage was his surname Mountbatten, which he took from his mother's family.

The Queen, however, kept her official surname, Windsor, even after becoming Philip’s wife. After the birth of the royal couple’s first children, Charles and Anne, Philip, naturally, wanted them to have his last name.

Nonetheless, neither Elizabeth nor her mother Queen Mary wanted to allow him to do so. Moreover, the Prime Minister at that time, Winston Churchill, was strongly against it as well.

That created a massive tension between Elizabeth and Philip, which lasted for almost a decade. The monarch’s husband felt “deeply hurt,” like he had no voice in his own family.

The tension turned into a real feud until the Queen couldn’t take it anymore. When she was pregnant with Prince Andrew, she raised the subject that had been “irritating her husband” for years again and a compromise was finally reached.

On February 8, 1960, the new declaration was made that stated that all of the Queen’s descendants will adopt Mountbatten-Windsor as their name if they don’t wish to have the title of His or Her Royal Highness.

The fight for titles is a normal thing in the royal families across the world. However, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry want their son to not have any.

Yet, little Archie might still become a Prince when his granddad Prince Charles inherits the throne. We will see what the future has in store for the Sussex baby.
