Melissa McCarthy knows how to deal with criticism. Throughout her years working in the movie industry, she has grown a thick skin and fights the critics back with the words of wisdom.
Every time she gets slammed for her 'unconventional' looks, the actress reminds herself what is really important in life and how happy she is. She says that those detractors are “swimming in the pool of hate” while she is simply enjoying her life, laughing every day with her loving husband and kids.
But it took her some time to get over the shockingly personal criticism, which stung like a bee.
In one of her recent interviews, McCarthy went down the memory lane, remembering the heartbreaking things she heard about herself.
The 48-year-old recalled how she was once asked during a panel with around 100 people in the room:
Why do you always feel the need to be so grotesque?
She said that she didn’t understand the question to which the interviewer replied:
You look sloppy, you’re not wearing any makeup, your hair is not done, you’re yelling at people.
The astounded actress answered:
OK, so have you ever asked this of a guy? I’m playing a character. You need to get out more if you don’t think there are real women like that.
McCarthy also remembered that time when she was asked whether she was shocked that she can actually work in the showbiz at her “tremendous size.”
This is the price she has to pay to work in such unforgiving industry. Despite that, she teaches her two daughters body positivity, saying that as long as they are healthy, they should embrace the body they have. We couldn’t agree more with her statement!
