However, embracing natural locks might be something that is frowned upon in the entertainment industry. Women have to adjust themselves to ‘the picture perfect’ – the allusive standard created by Hollywood.
But there are the brave ladies who don’t bend to the demanding industry and revolutionize the beauty ideal we are so used to see. And one of those women is the talented and unapologetic Kathy Bates.
Fighting for being natural
In a candid, yet hilarious, interview with Anderson Cooper, the 70-year-old screen diva revealed that she had to fight to keep her gray hair.
They wanted to put a wig on me and I said “I’m not gonna do that'.
Cooper brought up the subject of double standards for guys, saying that women have a lot of pressure not to allow themselves to have gray locks.
And he is absolutely right, but we see how the beauty world is shifting into a more natural state, and pioneers like Kathy Bates show that women can be beautiful even with the gray hair they are trying so desperately to hide.
In fact, Bates is all about being natural. After having a double mastectomy following her cancer battle, she refused to have breast reconstruction. She famously said:
I don’t have breasts – so why do I have to pretend like I do?
We admire her for her incredible courage and for accepting herself just how she is, which is something we definitely need to learn in this looks-obsessed age.
