Loretta Lynn married Oliver, who was mainly known as 'Doolittle', when she was just a 15-year-old girl. At that time Doo was 21, but he was certain that he and his sweetheart were ready to start a family. They went on having 6 children together, 4 of them were born before Loretta turned 25.

Doo was the one who purchased Lynn her first $17 guitar, which she didn’t know how to play at that time, and encouraged her to become a singer.

Up to this day, Loretta credits her husband for her successful career. However, it’s hard to call their marriage ‘ideal’.

One of the hardest love stories

Doo and Loretta were married for nearly 50 years until he passed away in 1996 when he was 69 years old. In an interview with ABC News, the country legend revealed that he was not the best husband in the world. Doolittle constantly cheated on her and once, even left her while she was giving birth to their child.

Their fights were legendary, filled with passion and violence. He had violent tendencies, especially when he was drinking, but Lynn says she was able to protect herself:

He never hit me one time that I didn't hit him back twice.

Many would ask why she didn’t divorce him, to which the singer answers with certainty in her eyes:

I loved him.

Despite everything she went through in her marriage, Loretta says that Doo was the love of her life. In one of her autobiographies, she wrote:

I married Doo when I wasn't but a child, and he was my life from that day on. But as important as my youth and upbringing was, there's something else that made me stick to Doo. He thought I was something special, more special than anyone else in the world, and never let me forget it.
