26 Years Since 'Golden Girls' Finale: New Sweet Behind-The-Scenes Moments And Secrets Are Revealed
It’s unbelievable, but the Golden Girls finale aired 26 years ago! The series attracted more than 25 million viewers, won 11 Emmy awards, and it is still loved by the audience!
In honor of the successful show’s anniversary, let’s reminisce about some of its touching behind-the-scenes moments and secrets.
For example, did you know that the famous quartet – Betty White, Estelle Getty, Bea Arthur, and Rue McClanahan – were also close to one another in real life? They not only gossiped on set but also helped and supported each other through tragedies and tears.
As Betty White once said:
Between scenes, instead of going to our dressing rooms, we'd sit there and yak about very intimate things.
When they were shooting the first season, both Betty and Bea’s mothers died, which bonded the actresses. That year was so rough that the directors were even ready to shut down the series for as long as White and Arthur needed. Instead, the two decided to proceed.
You might have heard rumors that Betty and Bea didn’t get along, but their co-stars and friends say the duo was tight. Bea would only go to dinner with Betty. And Betty would often pick Bea in the driveway.
Of course, there were other personal hardships. Estelle Getty struggled with anxiety attacks. She could not keep up with the ever-changing lines and was often afraid to perform.
As Rue McClanahan revealed:
She had an awful time remembering her lines because she would freeze and panic.
It was quite stressful for Estelle, but her wonderful performance is among the reasons for the success of the series. And the show will always hold a special place in our hearts.
