Recently, the actor stepped in to save a deliveryman who was harassed by a gang of thugs in London. Ironically, the incident happened not far from the famous Baker Street. Manuel Dias, an Uber driver was taking the star and his wife to the dinner when Cumberbatch spotted the Deliveroo cyclist being beaten.

Cumberbatch immediately jumped out of the taxi and ran toward the hooligans shouting “Leave him alone!” The driver soon joined Cumberbatch. There was a scuffle and it was only then that Dias realized his passenger was the famous actor. He even tackled the assailant, although he was unarmed.

Eventually, the hooligans took off, leaving the battered cyclist. Thankfully, he was not severely hurt and was very grateful to Cumberbatch. Clearly, the star can hold his own in a brawl.

Cumberbatch has had his own fair share of trouble. Back in 2005, when he was in South Africa filming 'To the Ends of the Earth', he was kidnapped by a gang of carjackers. Cumberbatch was returning to his hotel in a car with actor Denise Black and a friend from South Africa when the incident happened.

After searching him and his companions for valuables, the kidnappers bundled them into a car and drove off-road. He was tied up and locked in the boot of the car when he somehow managed to talk the kidnappers out of it.

I just tried to explain to them: "I will die, possibly have a fit, and it will be a problem for you. I will be a dead Englishman in your car. Not good".

Eventually, the kidnappers let Cumberbatch and his friends go. Speaking after the ordeal, the star said the incident made him have a rethink about life in general.

It taught me that you come into this world as you leave it, on your own. It’s made me want to live a life slightly less ordinary.

Kidnappings can be particularly traumatic for people who get taken and even more so for family members. It is important to remain calm. Kidnappers are usually uneasy when their victims put up a fight or act nervous.

For family members, the first thing to do is to contact the police. Be sure to provide as much information about the victim as possible, this will aid rescue efforts. Sometimes, relatives of kidnapped victims may suffer shock. It is advisable to have some levelheaded people around to serve as a buffer.

In extreme cases, seek professional help. As kidnapping cases differ, it is also advisable to be patient while authorities conduct investigations. Also, joining community groups that offer support to family members can help in times of distress.
