The Royal Ascot is said to be Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite event and is perhaps the most glamorous social gathering of the year. However, like much else about the royal family, there are rules that need to be followed when attending the event.

The most alarming is probably the dress code. The Queen has a 36-page guide for guest with pointers on how to dress for the occasion. So no sweatpants or jeans here.

Men are expected to wear long pants and a jacket while women are supposed to have a fascinator or small hat on. This rule pertains to guests in the casual enclosures. But those in the Royal Enclosure step it up several notches, and the attire for men is pretty concise.

Grey or black matte morning coat, single-breasted with peaked lapels, curved front edges sloping back into tails. Trousers are grey or grey and black-striped. A top hat must be worn.

Women must wear hats and their dresses must be cut below the knees. And when it came to hats, it seems like the women at this year’s event went all out. Here are some of the brightest and most creative hats and fascinators ever captured at the Ascot.
