They danced for around half an hour, and this moment has become one of the most iconic in her entire life.

During the exclusive interview with The Telegraph, John Travolta talked about his dance with Princess Diana at the White House gala dinner in 1985:

There really was something lovely and girlish about her, and I felt that I had taken her back to her childhood, when she had probably watched 'Grease'. And for that moment, I was her Prince Charming.

John Travolta has previously watched Princess Diana dancing with her husband, but that moment was indeed special for him:

I’d seen her dance with Charles beforehand, so I knew that she was strong. But she looked like she was leading and, because I knew that the world was watching, I thought that I really needed to give her certainty that I knew what to do.

John added:

I put my hand in the middle of her back, brought her hand down so that it wouldn’t be so high, and gave her the confidence that we would do just fine.

Nevertheless, it is reported that Princess Diana wanted to dance with another man instead of John Travolta.

In the documentary The Last 100 Days of Diana, Diana's former butler Paul Burrell revealed her real preferences:

Nancy and Ronny Regan set up the press to take a picture of her dancing with John Travolta. She said, 'I didn't really want to dance with him, though. I wanted to dance with Mikhail Baryshnikov. Because he is my hero.
