Hargitay received multiple nominations for her portrayal of Olivia Benson, including winning an Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

But behind the astounding success, there is a tragic backstory, which could serve as a plot for a television drama itself.

Tragic loss of a mother

It was 1967, 3-year-old Mariska was in a car with her family: mother, legendary actress Jayne Mansfield, and her two other siblings.

They were on the way of Mansfield's work, when, suddenly, the driver's vision became obstructed by the thick fog of mosquito spray from the truck ahead.

The horrifying collision claimed the lives of Mariska's mother, her boyfriend, and their driver, but spared the future TV star and her two older brothers.

At the time of the accident, Hargitay was asleep in the backseat and doesn't remember what has happened. But scar on the side of her head serves as a constant reminder of the day that robbed her of ever getting to know her remarkable mother.

Jayne Mansfield was only 34 when her life was cut short. The blonde bombshell was best known for her daring public persona, as well as a spot-on impression of Marylin Monroe.

Mariska is devastated by never really knowing her mother, but she soaked up everything she could from the people, who got a glimpse of Mansfield spectacular personality.

My mother was this amazing, beautiful, glamorous sex symbol—but people didn't know that she played the violin and had a 160 IQ and had five kids and loved dogs. She was just so ahead of her time. She was an inspiration, she had this appetite for life, and I think I share that with her.

Hargitay has learned to embrace her tragic past and move forward from losing her amazing mom.

Losing my mother at such an early age is the scar of my soul. But I feel like it ultimately made me into the person I am today. I understand the journey of life. I had to go through what I did to be here.

Remarkable resemblance

Although Jayne Mansfield couldn't raise her daughter, she's always with her. All Mariska needs to do to see her mom is to look in the mirror.

Mother and daughter share striking resemblance as it's often pointed out to Hargitay.

Mariska is grateful for having a part of her mother always with her:

She's with me still.

In the end, strong spirit and Hargitay's three wonderful children help her through life and make her the amazing woman she's known to be.
