None of this would have happened, … could have happened without our Lady of Soul. She led me to where I am today, and I know she influenced so many people in this house tonight, … in this room tonight. And I want to thank you Aretha for empowering all of us.

Aretha Franklin passed on to the great beyond on August 16, in Detroit, after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. Doctors diagnosed Franklin with the condition in 2010, but like the champion she is, she fought bravely and eventually retired in 2017. She was 76.

Madonna may have gotten positive responses to her speech at the VMA’s, but some commentators on social media feel that her words were ill-timed and far from paying tribute. According to them, Madonna intentionally drew attention to herself and her achievements.

It is likely that some of these commentators are misconstruing Madonna’s intentions during the speech. It is almost unavoidable pointing out personal achievements when giving credit to another person.

The fact remains that Aretha Franklin was truly inspirational to several generations of musicians and her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of her millions of fans.
