Serena Williams Will Not Celebrate Her Daughter Olympia's Birthdays Because Of Her Religious Beliefs

Date September 24, 2018 09:30

It seems like only yesterday pro tennis player Serena Williams announced that she was 22-weeks pregnant. Fast forward a year and her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr. marks a major milestone.

Williams reportedly had an entire floor of the hospital she delivered at cleared so she could have her baby away from prying eyes.

In May, Williams held a baby shower in Miami and several of her celebrity friends attended. One of her oldest friends, Meghan Markle, did not attend as she was visiting her then-fiancé, Prince Harry.

Many Williams fans were looking forward to the star marking her daughter’s birthday in grand style. However, during a press conference at the U.S. Open, she revealed that there would be no celebration.

Olympia doesn’t celebrate birthdays. We’re Jehovah’s Witnesses, so we don’t do that.

Her faith does not support birthday celebrations

Jehovah’s Witnesses believe that celebrating birthdays displease God and as such, and abstain from it. The church’s website explains that activities during birthdays are the main concern, not the celebrations as a whole. In addition, birthday celebrations reportedly have roots in paganism.

To each his own

Some Williams fans on social media are quite surprised that she is a Jehovah’s Witness, whereas others say they knew all along.

Tough luck to everyone who expected delightful birthday pictures from Williams and her husband, entrepreneur Alexis Olympia Ohanian. Of course, the family still recognized the fact their beautiful baby turned one and we bet they at least took some celebratory pictures to mark the day.

But there was no party, and unless Williams and her family decide to change religion, it is unlikely anyone will get to see Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.'s birthday party photos.
