Melania Trump Must Follow An Important Rule When Meeting The Queen, While Michelle Obama Famously Broke It

Date June 22, 2018 16:07

President Trump and the First Lady are preparing for their visit to Britain for the first time since the inauguration.

The presidential couple will meet the Queen on July 13, and this will also be the first overseas outing for Melania since her recent kidney surgery.

As expected, both Donald and Melania will be required to follow royal protocol around Queen Elizabeth II. It's especially important for the First Lady as her predecessor broke one of such rules.

No touching

When meeting with the Queen, any sort of unrequited physical contact is forbidden with Her Royal Highness. It's only allowed to shake her hand when she initiates the gesture.

Melania and Donald Trump must follow this rule. However, we don't expect the First Lady to break this royal protocol since she's proven herself to be not a tectile person. At times, she even refuses to hold her husband's hand.

Though, we are a bit concerned about Mr. President respecting the Queen's personal boundaries. He famously shook the hand of the UK Prime Minister Theresa May, and who's to say he's not going to do it again.

Michelle Obama's mistake

Now, it may seem that 'not touching the Queen' rule is easy to remember, but Michelle Obama once forgot about this important protocol.

In 2009, the Obamas met with Her Majesty, and the First Lady put her hand around her to pose for the photograph.

The Queen didn't seem to mind and, apparently, put her hand on Michelle first, but it was enough to send British citizens into frenzy.

Media, however, said it wasn't that big of a deal, since Michelle Obama isn't Her Majesty's subject and not actually required to follow this rule. But again, this is simply technicality – it's still advised to keep your hands to yourself when meeting with the royalty.

We're hoping the Trumps' visit to the UK will go smoothly, and Melania acts according to the protocol.
