One of the most iconic sitcoms of all time The Mary Tyler Moore Show provided us with countless laughs, offered important social commentary and helped many of its brilliant talents shine for seven seasons.
During season 4 of the show, audiences were pleasantly surprised by the addition of the eminent Betty White. Her character was vibrant and led to some entertaining plot lines.
We especially loved the chemistry between Betty's character, Sue Ann, and Ed Asner's Lou. They became one of the first original will-they-or-won't-they couples on TV, and we couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next.
We were also very pleased to find out that White and Asner were very close as colleagues, and Ed's respect for Betty is off the charts to this day.
Asner's admiration of his co-star
Before reuniting with White for her sitcom Hot in Cleveland, Asner remembered how it was like working with her on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and was very much looking forward to acting alongside the legendary actress again.
She has become an American institution. I have to bend my knee every time I run into her and I’m getting tired of it [laughing]!
And he's not wrong. White's show The Golden Girls was a smash hit in the 80-90s and is still adored by many fans. In addition, Betty is already over 90 years old, but she continues to work tirelessly, and we're happy we get to see so much of her!
Ed even joked about White finally getting some deserved rest, although his methods are slightly questionable:
With all this adulation that's being heaped on Betty now, I think it would be good for her to get fired. I think we ought to work toward making that happen.
Of course, we know that the famous actor isn't serious, and we actually love to see him like this. It really reminds us of how Ed and Betty were on The Mary Tyler Moore Show together.
Who knows, maybe we'll see these two reunite for yet another project soon?
