“Laughter”: NBC Anchor Lester Holt Reveals The Secret That Helped Keep His 37-Year Marriage With Wife Carol Hagen Strong

Family man

The award-winning broadcaster has been married to Carol Hagen, a real estate agent, since 1982. They have been blessed with two children, Cameron Holt and Stefan Holt, and a grandchild.

Born March 8, 1959, in California, Lester’s dream was initially to become a DJ. He fell in love with journalism and ever since, he hasn’t looked back.

He became a full-time anchor for weekend editions of Nightly News in 2007. Since 2011, he has been anchoring Dateline NBC.

In 2015, Lester was named NBC Nightly News anchor following the network’s decision to remove Brian Williams. 

He became the fourth solo anchor in the program’s history and the first African American man to solo anchor a nightly news broadcast. Following the death of David Bloom, Lester was named anchor of Weekend Today.

Making marriage work 

The NBC Nightly News anchor revealed in an interview what keeps his marriage strong with his wife of 37 years Carol.

He said that the secret to making his marriage work is to “laugh.” Speaking about his happy marriage to Extra, Lester said: 

We laugh a lot, we really do. I can be silly; she can be sillier. We just laugh through things and we know that everything, tough times will be a story at some point and boy have I put her through some tough times with this job.

The 60-year-old also opened up about Carol being his rock after many years: 

She’s has been so wonderful, she knows this job is going to bring a lot of late-night phone calls, but she's there for me and that means an awful lot.
