Dame Joan Collins learned from her mistakes with previous four marriages, as she finally discovered the secret to a happy and successful union.
84-year-old Collins, known for portraying Alexis Colby in Dynasty, has been married to her fifth husband, 52-year-old theatre manager Percy Gibson, for 18 years.
The couple met in San Francisco when Joan was performing on a stage production of A. R. Gurney’s Love Letters where Percy was the theatre manager.
Previously, she shared the secret that kept them together for so long:
I think the secret to a happy marriage is to really support each other. Understand that there will be highs and lows. You won’t always agree about everything, but you need to enjoy each other’s company. Percy is such an amazing man, he is so kind and so caring. People get married on the crest of lust. Once that’s gone, they look and think: ‘What the hell? Who is this person?’ There has to be something else to fall back on. If there isn’t, they start looking.
Joan also gives a hilarious insight into her relationship with Gibson, saying:
We are together 24/7 except when he snores, and I say, “Darling, I think it’s best that you sleep in the guest room tonight”.
Moreover, she thinks that her fellow star Michael Caine’s words about bathroom arrangements are not far from the truth:
Michael once said the secret to a happy marriage is separate bathrooms. We try to keep to that rule. It really does make a difference.
The actress admits that her marriage with Percy is not perfect:
Of course, we get irritated with each other but we are quick to say sorry and we don’t have any secrets. We compliment each other all the time but I’m also quick to point out if he’s getting a bit of a tummy, and he will say if I’ve gone a bit OTT with the glitz.
Percy loves me best when we are at home together – me without make-up and him unshaven and in his tracksuit bottoms.
After she divorced her fourth husband, Peter Holm, Joan declared she will never marry again. But Percy Gibson swept her off her feet and made her change her mind.
