The British royals are probably the most well-known family in the world. It’s hard to say how many times we’ve heard the name of the Duchess of Cambridge or the Duchess of Sussex. And while it seems like we know all about them, there are some family members who like to stay in the shadow.

The list of possible successors to the British throne is pretty long, but we want to focus on number 47. This place is taken by the Queen’s cousin, Prince Michael of Kent, who is believed to be one of the most controversial royals.

Prince Michael is often seen at many official events, yet not a lot of people know about him. We have collected interesting facts about the under-the-radar royal.

Surprising lineage

Prince Michael of Kent is the son of Prince George, the Duke of Kent, and Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. The 76-year-old and the Queen are first cousins.

But Prince Michael is not only a member of the British royal family. He is also a distant relative of the last imperial family in Russia, the famous Romanovs.

Scandalous daughter

Prince Michael’s daughter, Lady Gabriella of Windsor, was a subject of a scandalous essay, written by her ex-boyfriend and published in Vanity Fair.

The essay described the time the couple spent in London, where they were swimming nude in the Buckingham Palace pool and doing drugs.

Racist wife

The same essay featured a joke about Prince Michael’s wife, who named her two black sheep Venus and Serena. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t the first racist allegation Princess Michael of Kent was involved in.

Rent money

In 2002, it was revealed that the Kents live in Buckingham Palace, but they are not the ones who pay the rent. It turned out that the Queen was paying for her cousin’s accommodation from her own pocket. However, they've been paying their rent on their own since 2010.
