Last year, Senator John McCain was diagnosed with glioblastoma, aggressive brain cancer. He had been strongly confronting the disease for the last year. But, unfortunately, on August 25, the politician lost his battle at the age of 81.
McCain passed away peacefully, surrounded by his beloved family. His 33-year-old daughter, Meghan, was also by his side, supporting her dad in his last moments. A few days after his death, she took to Instagram to share the farewell letter the senator devoted to all Americans.
And it couldn’t be more powerful and touching
In it, McCain, who had served his country for nearly six decades, thanked his fellow Americans for giving him an opportunity to serve the country. The Senator added that despite having some regrets, he’s grateful for the life and the family he had:
I have often observed that I am the luckiest person on earth. I feel that way even now as I prepare for the end of my life. I have loved my life, all of it. I have had experiences, adventures and friendships enough for ten satisfying lives, and I am so thankful.
Please read my father's farewell letter to the country he loved so much - “Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender.” 🇺🇸 pic.twitter.com/pwZUR7R3dp— Meghan McCain (@MeghanMcCain) August 27, 2018
Of course, he couldn’t help but mention his love to America and its citizens. Even though there are fights and disagreements within the country, it’s still possible to get through all challenges and become stronger:
Do not despair of our present difficulties but believe always in the promise and greatness of America, because nothing is inevitable here. Americans never quit. We never surrender. We never hide from history. We make history.
The letter clearly touched to tears many people who rushed to Twitter to comment on it
Meghan, this letter should be printed in every newspaper. So moving, all decent people no matter their politics must be moved by it. I'm so sorry for your loss. 💔— Julia_resists (@soith_feargach) August 27, 2018
Wow, that is a remarkable goodbye letter. Thank you for sharing it as I find being an American a hard thing to be lately. I will miss Sen. McCain and his steadfast belief in all things American.— Sara Blessington (@sarabless) August 28, 2018
He wrote eloquently. He was brave. He loved his family & his country. It seems the love from family & others, compelled him to shine. His light will live on, as a timeless example. Wishing you & your family love & peace.— Rhonda (@RhondaTheCat) August 28, 2018
My heart breaks for you and your family Meghan. It’s never easy to lose a parent and I have lost both now. Keep his memory alive! Keep sharing him with us is the best advice I can ever give. As long as we speak their name, they are still with us. Peace to you and your family.— Colleen Marie 🍀 (@GroovyColleen) August 27, 2018
I watched your father on Sunday mornings for over 20 years. I always loved when he was on Meet The Press or another talk show. He always spoke candidly and sometimes with sharp humor. I vote Democrat, but I really liked him. He saved healthcare with one of his last votes. God Bls— Patricklessard (@Patricklessar16) August 28, 2018
Rest in peace, John McCain! You will be forever missed!
