How Bocelli discovered his true passion

Andrea Bocelli was born with poor vision due to congenital glaucoma. His parents wanted him to live a full life, so they took him to various eye specialists. They even turned to healers for help.

It was during one of the hospital visits that Bocelli first discovered his love of music. Bocelli, who was just a toddler back then, got fussy but suddenly became calm after he heard music playing in the ward next door.

When Bocelli was 12 years old, he was accidentally struck in the head during a soccer match and went completely blind. At that point, his passion for signing had already blossomed, but he didn’t know it would play a central role in his life.

When Bocelli studied law at the University of Pisa, he earned money singing and playing piano in bars. A few years later, Luciano Pavarotti heard Bocelli’s magnificent voice on a demo tape, and that’s when the ball started rolling for the young singer.

What Bocelli does to help others

In 2011, the singer started Andrea Bocelli Foundation, a charity that supports various projects around the world, among which is research to develop devices to make lives of people with visual impairment better. Speaking to The Independent in 2013, Bocelli said:

We are investing in a project in MIT [Massachusetts Institute of Technology] in Boston for the creation of an instrument that is able to help blind people to walk along everywhere.

Although not everyone around the young Bocelli was supportive and encouraging, he never let his blindness get in the way of his ambitions. Speaking to The Independent, he said:

Growing up, every day they told me ‘this is too dangerous’ but I don’t care. Everything is dangerous. To take the car and go out on the highway is also very dangerous or to fly in a helicopter. I like very much to ride horses. I like soccer, I have had a passion for boxing since I was a child although it would be stupid for me to box.

The singer wants his success to inspire others, especially young people. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter before the premiere of The Music Of Silence, the film based on his life story, he said:

My story reaffirms that there is no impossible dream. The essential thing is to believe in it, and to pursue one’s own project of life with honesty, humility and discipline. Mine is, fundamentally, a message of faith. There is a project, in fact, that has been conceived for each of us. And it is up to us to identify and honor it. Fate does not exist; every life is a story corresponding to a precise direction.
