'It’s Time For Him To Leave The House': Jada Pinkett Smith On Why She Approved Her Son's Request To Be Emancipated At 15

Date June 6, 2018

Not every mother will be very understanding if her 15-year-old up and decided he/she wants to be emancipated. But Jada Pinkett Smith took Jaden's request in her stride, giving some people a few lessons in motherhood.

Wanting to be free for his 15th birthday

In 2013, there were reports that Jaden had expressed his desire to be emancipated from his parents. Will Smith reportedly fully intended on letting his son have it.

During an interview with UK Sun, Will Smith said:

(Jaden) says, 'Dad, I want to be emancipated.' I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants to have his own place, like ooh.

Understandably, that came as a big surprise to his parents.

'I was devastated'

Many years after he made that request, Jaden's mother has opened up about how she really felt at the time.

During a recent episode of 'Red Table Talk', Jada revealed that hearing her teenage son say he wanted to leave home and live by himself was pretty shocking.

Describing it as one of the most "heartbreaking moments of my life," Jada said:

I remember thinking to myself, as devastated as I was, I was like, ‘He’s right.’ The time is now. He’s 15. It’s time for him to leave the house.

Her son did not end up going through with the plan, but Jada was completely understanding at the time. She felt that Jaden, like most children, sometimes needs to experience something different.

Jade explained that living all his life in "a bubble" of fame and attention may be the reason why he wanted to take a break. She understood him because unlike her son, she had experienced the freedom and possibilities that life offers. She also knew what that experience taught her and felt her son might learn from it as well.

I knew the sooner I let him go, the faster he was going to come back.

Clearing the air

Soon after Will Smith revealed his son's intention to be emancipated in 2013, the actor and the then 14-year-old went on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to clear things up.

"I'm not going anywhere," Jaden said at the time adding that his house offered him the kind of freedom he could not get anywhere else.

I'm going to be there 20, 30 more years.

Jaden did add that his father promised that Jaden could have a house of his own as soon as "I have a movie that's bigger than one of his movies."

Will and Jada obviously know what it means to put their kids' needs above theirs even when the children made choices that they may not necessarily agree with.
