"I Can't Get Rid Of It!" Prince William On The Adorable Nickname His Mother Had For Him

Date June 20, 2018

Many moms have special nicknames for their kids and apparently, Princess Diana was no different.

Prince William's cute alias

The royal was only a teenager when his mother passed away in August 1997. And since then, he and his brother, Harry, have not shied away from sharing many wonderful memories from when she was alive.

In 2007, Prince William sat down with NBC's Matt Lauer and revealed the cute nickname his mother had for him. He said to Diana, at least, he was known as 'Wombat" and apparently, that nickname stuck.

It kind of stuck with me. I can't get rid of it now.

Narrating the origin of the name, William said when he was 2, he and his family visited Australia and apparently, the local animal, the wombat, seemed to inspire the fun side of his mom.

So I just basically got called that. Not because I look like a wombat — or maybe I do.

Another special name for the Duke

Princess Diana was not the only one that thought William deserved a super special nickname. Kate Middleton had one for her husband as well.

Even though the couple has been pretty private about their relationship, we once got an intimate glimpse into their lives.

After William's phone was illegally tapped into in 2006, he was heard calling Kate, who was his girlfriend at the time, "babykins." About 10 years later, during a rare moment of PDA at the Chelsea Flower Show, the pair referred to each other as "darling." And at one point, she called him "babe" too.

Queen Elizabeth has a charming nickname as well

As a young Princess, Elizabeth apparently created her own nickname which the rest of her family, including her dad King George VI, soon began to call her.

Because she struggled to pronounce her name, she always called herself 'Lilibet'. Her sister Margaret liked that too and before long, the family started calling the future Queen by that name.
