The First Thing Queen Elizabeth Hears When She Wakes Up In The Morning

Date September 28, 2018 20:00

Being a royal sure has its perks. From the food you eat, places you visit and even right down to how you wake up in the morning. Queen Elizabeth II, for example, has a pretty fascinating alarm clock.

A royal wakeup call

Queen Elizabeth wakes up every morning at 9 am to a beautiful sound – bagpipes playing.

A bagpiper who is under her employ will stand outside Her Majesty's windows and blow until she wakes up. This Piper to the Sovereign is also responsible for ensuring that the Queen does not sleep through her alarm. So he carries on playing for 15 minutes (wonder if she ever misses having a snooze button).

The post of the special bagpiper did not actually originate from QEII herself. It was established in 1843 when Queen Victoria was the ruler. She had heard and fell in love with the sound a year prior and apparently decided that it was the best thing to wake up to.

Queen Victoria then hired the first official royal piper named Angus McKay and since then 15 people have taken that spot.

On September 3, 2000, Brian MacRae, the Queen's official bagpiper for 15 years passed away at the age of 58. It was reported at the time that he suffered a heart attack.

Apart from piping to wake up the Queen, he also performed at her dinner table and was in charge of 12 pipers who played during state banquets. He retired at the age of 52.

Since 2015, the Queen has been listening to the same bagpiper – Pipe Major Scott Methven from the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.

What does she have for breakfast?

After waking up to such lovely sound, we have to wonder how she starts her day, food-wise.

Darren McGrady, who was a special chef to the Queen for years, told the UK Telegraph that Her Majesty is not really a foodie.

For breakfast, she usually preferred some of her Special K cereals and some fruits. So in a way, she's just like a regular person.

Except, of course, for the fact that she has her own personal bagpiper playing beautiful music for her every morning.
