"I Thought The Worst!" Oprah Winfrey Opens Up About Her Health Scare And The Lesson It Taught Her
There are all kinds of diseases out there and anything can feel like a symptom. So when Oprah noticed something wasn't right about her body, she understandably panicked. And she ended up learning a valuable lesson.
"I thought the worst"
It was just an ordinary day, Oprah wrote. But while making her breakfast, she noticed that her neck was sore.
The area under the left side of my chin felt tender. In the mirror, I could see it was swollen.
By the time she finished making her meal, the swelling had gotten worse. And she did the one thing one should never do in a situation like that. She googled her symptoms. And anyone would tell you, you hardly ever get good news when you do that.
She then called an internist who walked her through a few things before asking her to come in to see a doctor. For hours, she was in a state of panic as she could not figure out why her neck could suddenly swell.
For the next four hours, I thought the worst. Maybe whatever it was had been growing for days or longer, and I only now noticed.
As it turned out, Oprah's life wasn't actually in danger like she feared. After checking her, she was told that her salivary glands were blocked and that she should drink plenty of water to stimulate the salivary ducts.
Oprah was surprised to learn that she worked herself up to a frenzy for no reason. In fact, she literally could not believe it. So much so that she called another doctor who ended up giving the same diagnosis.
So she did as they said. She drank some water and within two days, the swelling was gone. But this experience thought her something important about the human body.
I was grateful. Not just because things weren’t worse, but for the simple awareness that a tiny salivary gland can get clogged with mucus or crystallized-calcium stones and disrupt your whole system.
Oprah became more appreciative of her body and what it can do.
Too often we are not grateful for their perfect functioning, balancing bacteria and enzymes, managing blood flow, thrumming the sinus rhythm beat, beat, beat of our hearts day in, day out.
She encouraged people to always appreciate their health and not to take anything for granted. Oprah's advice? Regardless of whatever is going on in your life, you must remember to be grateful. All you need to do is take a look at your body and the amazing ways it functions to keep you alive.
Truly, you are a marvel.
A busy woman
The good news is that the media mogul will be well enough to give a keynote speech in a matter of months. It has been announced that Oprah will be speaking at the Qualtrics X4 Experience Management Summit at the Salt Palace in Utah from March 5 to March 8, 2019.
Other previous speakers at this annual summit include Angela Duckworth, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and Tony Hawk.
