The book is deemed to be one of the best books of 2018 and it has already topped a number of best-seller lists with the help of a sky-high number of preorders. In her new memoir, Michelle shares interesting and unexpected stories.

One of them is about that one rare time the Queen broke the royal protocol when the Obamas visited the Buckingham Palace.

The Queen is more laid back that you might think

Writing in her book, Michelle recalls the time when she met the British monarch, who, to her surprise, acted a little bit naughty.

She writes:

We were briefed on the protocol ahead of time: We’d greet the Royals formally before getting into their vehicle to make the short drive. I’d sit in the front next to ninety-four-year-old Prince Philip, who would drive, and Barack would sit next to the Queen in the back seat.

But then Her Majesty did something very rear – broke the royal protocol. Mrs. Obama says:

After we’d touched down in a field on the palace grounds and said our hellos, however, the Queen abruptly threw a wrench into everything by gesturing for me to join her in the back seat of the Range Rover.

I froze, trying to remember if anyone had prepared me for this scenario, whether it was more polite to go along with it or to insist that Barack take his proper seat by her side.

She continues, proving that the Queen can act how she wants:

The Queen immediately picked up on my hesitations and was having none of it. ‘Did they give you some rule about this?’ she said, dismissing all the fuss with a wave of her hand. ‘That’s rubbish. Sit wherever you want.’

Who would expect such bold action from the Queen?

However, there are some rules Her Majesty can’t break

The royal protocol can allow a few slip-ups here and there. However, there are some rules that can’t be broken. For example, sitting with crossed legs is a big ‘no-no’ for royal ladies. Legs and knees should always be kept together, only crossing at the ankle is allowed.

Open cleavage is frowned upon as well, that’s why Princess Diana always covered it with her clutch bags. So being a royal might sound romantic, but in real life, they are the walking encyclopedias of the etiquette and their every mistake never goes unnoticed.
