Ayesha Curry Had A 'No Athletes Policy' Before Dating Pro Basketball Star Steph Curry

Date July 12, 2018 17:17

It has been a pretty exciting year for basketballer Steph Curry and his family. Just two days before the 4th of July, the Curry family welcomed their newest member, a healthy baby boy. His mother, chef and model Ayesha Curry, made the official name announcement on Instagram.

My heart is FULL. God has been too good to us. Our beautiful baby boy Canon W. Jack Curry 7/2/2018. He joined us earlier than we thought and we couldn't be more excited and grateful. Family of 5! @stephencurry30 #mynewman.

Canon joins his elder sisters Riley, 6, and Ryan, 3. And just like their parents, the girls were pretty excited to have a new kid join the family.

They almost did not end up together

The Curry family story could have been quite different, and it has little to do with the number of children they have now. Stephen and Ayesha met during their teens in a church youth group in Charlotte, N.C., and back then Ayesha did not fancy him much. She shared her story in an exclusive with PEOPLE.

We were just kids. He was the cute boy at church that all of the girls were obsessed with, so I made a generalization that maybe he wasn’t for me.

Years later, she said, her parents discovered an old paper from her high school theater class. Students back then were asked to write down qualities they wanted in their significant other. At the bottom of Ayesha’s list, she wrote something that she found amusing to recall:

At the bottom, it said, 'No athletes, because they’re arrogant'

From jump, Ayesha was averse to dating basketballers largely due to the perceived reputation most of them had. But one cheesy date later, she realized that she had judged Stephen wrong.

He was so funny and silly, the absolute opposite of what I thought he was going to be.

Stephen almost lost Ayesha when he told her he was unsure of how he felt about her. It was a devastating blow, especially seeing as Ayesha had grown to love him. Thankfully, they got married in 2011, and the rest is history.

With both their careers on the rise, the Curry’s were never happier. Love may have had a rocky start, but now they are happier off and grateful for the life lessons love has taught them. The couple also appeared on a popular TV show “Family Feud,” and fans loved the chemistry between the duo.

Is there another little Curry in the works? Nobody knows. But one thing is certain: Any new kid is sure to be treated to the amusing history Steph and Ayesha share.
