Angela Lansbury’s 1988 Wellness Video Is Still Quite Relevant In 2018 For Good Reason

93-year-old Angela Lansbury may not sound particularly familiar to new Hollywood fans but back in the day. She was a familiar face on the silver screen for several decades and has to her credit an Honorary Oscar, five Tony Awards, six Golden Globes, and three nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.

But her life has not been without troubles. Her relationship with husband Peter Shaw was far from pleasant sailing, and she had to manage her children and their drug addiction problems. In spite of her demons, she still maintains a positive outlook on life, especially in her later years.

In 1988, Lansbury released a video titled “Angela Lansbury's Positive Moves: My Personal Plan for Fitness and Well-Being.” In the video, she shared some personal tips on how to maintain a healthy life which included her very own exercise routine. And even today, it still holds some golden truths.

Give yourself a rub-down

Giving yourself a self-massage as part of a daily routine can work wonders. It offers the opportunity to also discover any abnormalities on the surface or get hints about what may lie beneath. A massage therapist may get you relaxed but it is unlikely anyone will know your body better than you.

It also offers ample time for reflection on the day ahead and can be a moment for self-affirmation.

Exercise!

She developed a unique exercise that is a variation of the breast-stroke in swimming. Simply hold your hands up together at your chest in Position 1. Push forward and outward into Position 2, then spread arms wide apart to Position 3. Return your palms to Position 1 to complete the motions for this particular exercise.

It may not be the same as swimming in a pool, but it does work wonders for the body just the same.

Live theatrically

Lansbury suggested using expressive gestures for everyday speaking. Essentially, exaggerated hand movements provide opportunities to flex muscles not just I the arm but also in the torso. It is a lot like being on a stage right in your own home or workspace.

Pamper yourself

At the end of a day, a luxurious soak in a hot tub can be quite rejuvenating and even help increase sex drive, particularly with older women. In her video, she shared her thoughts on the assumption that older women are disinterested in their sexuality.

I think femininity and sexuality go hand in hand. It used to be thought that women lose interest in sex after menopause. But now we know that just isn’t true.

For Lansbury, growing old is not a reason to lose touch with femininity and she has proof. At 83, she still looks fabulous and healthy.
