"Truly One Of The Greatest Moments Of My Career": Celine Dion Recalls Performing With Aretha Franklin In 1998

After a career that spanned several decades and inspired millions of young people around the world to follow their passion, the “Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin took her final bow on August 16. For eight years, she braved the odds of surviving pancreatic cancer, only retiring from music making in 2017.

Franklin performed for the last time in November 2017 at a New York Gala organized by the Elton John Aids Foundation. Even with her declining health, the icon remained strong-willed. This excerpt from a statement released by her family reflected how much love she had even in her final days.

In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family. The love she had for her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins knew no bounds.

Dion performed with Franklin alongside Gloria Estefan, Mariah Carey, Carole King, and Shania Twain at the VH1 Divas Live event in 1998 in support of Save The Music Foundation.

Fans of the late diva are still commiserating with her family and expressing their sadness at her passing.
