On the afternoon of July 24, police received a 911 call from the residence of singer Demi Lovato in Hollywood Hills who was reportedly suffering from a drug overdose. TMZ who broke the news reported that the official police statement suggested heroin was the drug responsible.
They eventually rushed Lovato to a hospital to receive further treatment.
The inside scoop
Information reaching PEOPLE from a source close to the singer says that she was on a binger with some of her friends the night before the incident. The group then moved the party away from Saddle Ranch to Lovato’s home.
The source also revealed that Lovato’s party administered a drug called Narcan to her before the police arrived. Narcan is an emergency treatment used to reverse the effects of drug overdose. It is likely that this drug saved her life.
In addition, the source revealed that Lovato and her team were prepared for incidents such as this and always had the drug handy. Lovato’s struggle with addiction has been in the news for a while and the insider says she finds creative ways of getting access even when she is under supervision.
Lovato recently broke up with her management team and her recent overdose may be a fallout, but fans and well-wishers are rallying around to support her.

What is Narcan?
Most patients suffering a heroin overdose stop breathing and go into cardiac arrest. Narcan effectively puts a pause on the effect of heroin and allow regular muscular contractions of the heart. The drug can even bring people on the brink of death back to life.
First responders can administer Narcan into muscle, preferably the upper arm, thighs or buttocks. The drug also comes in nasal spray form and it works just like any regular nasal spray. There are no restrictions on the use of Narcan and it is readily available over the counter without a prescription.
