The beauty pageant world has been hit with some unexpected sad news. Former Miss Universe, Chelsi Smith, has passed on after a very private battle with cancer.

The sad loss

Smith, 45, succumbed to an aggressive liver cancer on Saturday. She was diagnosed just a year ago, her spokesman Jarrod Klawinsky revealed following the heartbreaking statement in which her family opened up about her death.

The former Miss Texas came to the attention of the world when she won the title of Miss USA and Universe in 1995. She tried to kick off a music career and took on a few acting gigs, but majorly remained under the radar. She lived in LA.

Fans mourn the loss

News of her death came as a shock to many because Smith did not disclose that she was battling cancer to fans on any of her social media pages.

Former Miss New York and close friend, Shanna Moakler, joined heartbroken fans to mourn her loss.

And her family said in their statement that the beauty queen would be missed for her infectious laughter, joie de vivre, and free spirit. Our prayers are with them.
