Senator John McCain is happily married and has five adult children. But till recent time, people didn’t know much about senator’s previous marriage and relationships with former wife Carol.
A new documentary premiering on HBO describes all the details of McCain’s failed marriage and its impact on his bond with children.
‘John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls’
Before John McCain tied the knot with his current wife, Cindy Lou Hensley, he was married to Carol McCain. The couple divorced in 1980 after 15 years of marriage.
In the HBO documentary John McCain: For Whom the Bell Tolls, Carol opens up why her marriage to John didn’t work out. Most people used to believe that senator’s love affair with a younger woman became the reason for their split. This woman is McCain’s second wife Cindy, who is 18 years younger than he.
But the truth is that Carol herself never blamed Cindy for her failed marriage. Ms. McCain explained she and John began to experience difficulties long before Cindy appeared on the horizon.
John’s introduction to Cindy was about the time our marriage was falling apart. He was looking for a way to be young again, and that was the end of that.
John and Carol’s eldest daughter, Sidney McCain, was probably the one who suffered most from all kids.
We were all shocked and heartbroken. It caused quite a rift within the family.
But at the time goes by, Sidney and her father’s second wife have developed the friendly relationships. Over the years, Sidney accepted the idea that her dad and Cindy are happy together. She told on HBO:
Cindy has been a rock during my dad’s battle with cancer.
It’s great that McCain’s children are mature enough to understand what is better for their father. Healthy relationships among relatives are very important. Do you agree?
