Friendship may be atypical for Hollywood, but not for Sir Elton John and Aretha Franklin. The singer recalled his tender relationship with the late 'Queen of Soul'.
Friendship between two music legends
Aretha Franklin’s passing appeared to be a devastating loss for her family, friends, numerous fans, and the entire music community. It’s always sad to say goodbye to legends like her.
A world-recognized and talented singer, Sir Elton John still mourns the demise of his good friend. He recalled Aretha’s last performance during his gala concert back in 2017.
Aretha was very sick, but it didn’t stop her from performing on stage. Sir Elton saw how hard it was for her, but, miraculously, as Franklin came onstage, she just got better. Sir Elton said he knew it was her final performance.
She was that frail. But boy did she perform. And what an honor. It was one of the greatest nights of my life. She just smiled her sweet smile at me and said, ‘I don’t want to let you down.’
Aretha did her best that night. It was her way of saying farewell to the stage that she devoted her entire life to.
Tribute to the eminent Aretha Franklin
The ‘Queen of Soul’ passed away on August 16, 2018, at the age of 76. No need to say it was a sad day for the world of music.
Sir Elton John was one of the first to pay memorable tributes to the late star. Sir Elton wrote on social media:
The loss of Aretha Franklin is a blow for everybody who loves real music…
The loss of Aretha Franklin is a blow for everybody who loves real music: Music from the heart, the soul and the Church. Her voice was unique, her piano playing underrated – she was one of my favourite pianists. I was fortunate enough to spend time with her and witness her last performance – a benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation at St John The Divine Cathedral. She was obviously unwell, and I wasn’t sure she could perform. But Aretha did and she raised the roof. She sang and played magnificently, and we all wept. We were witnessing the greatest soul artist of all time. I adored her and worshipped her talent. God bless her. My condolences to all her family and friends. We shared the same birthday – and that meant so much to me. The whole world will miss her but will always rejoice in her remarkable legacy. The Queen is dead. Long live the Queen. @arethasings #RIP #ArethaFranklin #QueenOfSoul @ejaf
Further in his tribute, Sir Elton mentioned that he and Aretha shared the same birthday, which meant a lot to him. The whole world misses Aretha, but he is proud that her legacy will live on through her greatest songs.
