Meeting an ex after decades of separation might seem scary, but sometimes, we just need to get things off the chest. A few years ago, Robert Downey Jr. finally reconnected with his former love of his life – Sarah Jessica Parker. And it was not awkward at all!
The two actors had been dating for 7 years before they separated in 1991. As Robert reveals, their relationship ended because of his struggle with addiction. Sarah Jessica tried to help him, but eventually, she realized she could not be with this person anymore.
I liked to drink, and I had a drug problem, and that didn’t jibe with Sarah Jessica, because it is the furthest thing from what she is.
24 years after their break-up, Downey Jr. met Parker at her house, got dinner together, and even met her children!
So what does Sarah Jessica think about Robert after all these years?
Actually, Parker is thankful for many things. Her relationship with Downey taught her how to love and showed what the difference between taking care and loving was.
Surprisingly, Robert might also have affected the way the 53-year-old raises her children. Caring for her partner and keeping him safe, the actress learned a bit about how to be a parent too:
The things that I ended up caring about, and the way I cared for Downey, were things that might be more suitable for a parent at a certain point.
Now, Sarah Jessica has a 15-year-old son, James, and she often asks herself the same questions she used to ask when she was in a relationship with Downey: What she should and shouldn’t do for him.
When does a parent let go? When do you let go in a relationship?
Of course, the two moved on a long time ago. Robert is sober now. He is married to Susan Downey, and the two share a son and a daughter.
As for Sarah Jessica, she tied the knot with Matthew Broderick in 1997.
The couple have son James and twins, Tabitha and Marion.
It looks like both Robert and Sarah Jessica are in their perfect place.
